All Sun and No Instagram Makes Anya Something Something

Leave it to the universe to bestow a load of wonderful internet content and comedic genius upon my life the moment I try to go on a short break from social media. It’s been a struggle not to mindlessly end up back on an app, especially when my feeds have been so narrowly curated that I can view some seriously Dope Art while catching up on Pertinent News within the timeframe of just a few minutes. But in an effort to try and wean enough to make this break an actual break (which so far has been largely unsuccessful), I’m deciding to blog a bit about the small amount of gardening I did today.

The sun is out, and the air is relatively warm. Not go-swimming-in-the-lake warm, but definitely jeans and flip flops warm. Spring is decidedly on its way. I stepped outside to stop my cat from meowling loudly while my partner was in a meeting, but ended up mired by my table of plant miscellany. I’ve had those plants wintering in a little sack meant to protect small trees in colder weather, and found that this was a particularly effective endeavor. The pineapple berries (a kind of hybridized strawberry) were an explosion of runners, planting itself in the pots of several adjacent plants, as well as just spreading roots around the bottom of the bag. I decided to delicately extract them - trying not to cringe at the alien nature of it all - and plant them properly in a part of our garden that’s becoming a bit of a throwaway section (relatively out of direct sun due to the giant douglas fir above it).

Figuring out a proper planting strategy ended up taking several confused tries, as planting its runners that grew every which way took some serious tetris logistics, but they’re properly planted now. And the other plants in that same sack have all come out into the open air where they can get some direct sun and stop collecting spider babies.

It felt so good to dig into dirt again.
