Expansion Amid Decay

Today sucked…

…But my jalapeño and ground cherry plants continue to progress as if it’s still summer, which warms me. It’s a small but vital daily respite. Whenever I look at the progress made by the ground cherry or hops (now decaying upward), I’ll always hear the lyric “expanding out its empire by degrees” - a lyric from the Decemberists’ song June Hymn, in reference to the ivy growing around the subject’s house. The song is sappy and formulaic, but it’s been a consistent favorite of mine for going on a decade (yikes).

In other plant news, one of the avocado pits I’ve tried to cultivate from a Fred Meyer batch may be looking hopeful. This has sat as a split seed husk for the entirety of the summer. I’d wager it was dead, save for the giant taproot I noticed continuing to outgrow its planter. I noticed a husk protrusion the other day, and found it’s choosing now (cold nights, low sunlight) as a time to finally start sprouting. Dunno what it’s thinking, but I’ve at least taken it inside to see if this crazy scheme of its continues.

Lastly, this early autumn sun is just exactly my favorite weather and time of year. Not to mention, with the sun riding lower in the sky, I have ample opportunity to snap backlit frond shots.
